I’ve been using the Elogoxa’s “X-Cita” for some time. Essentially, it’s a really straightforward exciter, an effect that creates harmonics to boost low or high range frequencies. It’s intended for mastering, but I personally like to use it to add extra punch to my percussion tracks. Check out its effect on a basic break:

You can download the X-Cita free from the Elogoxa team at http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm

It’s also included with a bunch of other free vsts in the “Huge Free VST Bundle,” which is listed under pages.
